The Butterfly Foundation is a community based, charitable organization that provides direct financial relief for people suffering with eating

disorders, and their carers. This is done via advocacy, lobbying, awareness, campaigns, health promotions, early intervention work and even professional training in primary and secondary school. The Foundation also increases awareness and understanding amongst the community and engage in supportive projects and programs for sufferers of eating disorders.

Brief

The brief for the new Butterfly Foundation was to provide a comprehensive source of information on eating disorders, how the Foundation provides support and where people, both sufferers and carers can get help.

The website was also to provide an efficient way for supporters of the foundation to provide additional support through buying Butterfly Foundation merchandise, tickets to events, and making donations online.

Challenges

There were a number of challenges in this project.

The second challenge was dealing with the different transactions that had online payments. These included products, tickets and donations. Products where straight forward but events and donations required special consideration both in terms of tax and in particular, number available for tickets. To help deal with tickets to events, we implemented a daily reporting system that would allow the Foundation to monitor how many tickets had been sold online so they could reconcile that with phone sales and make sure they hadn’t sold too many tickets!

The final challenge was making sure the online payments where monitors and reconciled against payments received. This was done via an exporting feature of all orders that could be checked against payments.

Services Delivered

A core part of this project was analysing the options available for online payments. This included researching what payment gateways were available and appropriate for the nature of transactions the Foundation required.
The other major part of consulting was devised a new information architecture that would support the existing content but provide a clearer structure that would also provide scope for growth.

Design

Creation of a visual design that incorporated the new style of the Butterfly Foundation while still providing a clean and easy to navigate website.

Development

Implementation of new information architecture. Creation of custom product types to handle the sale of tickets and donations. Integration of secure payment gateway.

Training

Training in the use of the eZ publish content management system and webshop functionality.

Wrap up

The new Butterfly Foundation website shows how a website can evolve from a place to find information to a business tool that helps an organisation spread it’s reach to both sufferers and carers alike. The new website is easier to read, easier for staff to use and also provides a far more efficient way for the foundation to sell tickets and save on labour. Overall, the new website will help the Butterfly Foundation better achieve their mission of changing the culture, policy and practice in the prevention and treatment of eating disorders.
