The Federal Publishing Company (FPC) is one of Australia’s leading publishers of websites, magazines and community newspapers. It produces and maintains a multi award-winning stable of titles that includes:

  • Estee Lauder Australia

Brief

FPC produces and supports a spread of high quality, high traffic online brands (websites) using eZ Publish - an enterprise level open source content management system (CMS). FPC Interactive Group Technology Manager, Mike Fegali, has commenced a bold and innovative strategic web management plan that involves the:

  • consolidation of the stable of website and products

  • converting all sites to the same version eZ Publish within short timeframes

  • training FPC developers to the highest level of competency and proficiency in eZ Publish

  • building a platform that will increase efficiency in website development and deployment

To assist in FPC implementing its strategic web management plan, they selected designIT due to its expertise in eZ Publish Development and being based in Australia. designIT consulted and developed an eZ Publish Re-Development Process that is to be applied to selected websites with designIT initially providing the Technical Lead.

Features

The Estee Lauder website is the first FPC website to go through the eZ Publish Re-Development Process as part of FPC’s strategic web management plan. This project required the following:

  • Technical and Functional Review

  • Strategy Plan to Upgrade it from eZ Publish v3.3.2 to v3.8.6

  • Rebuild new site and consolidate of the data structures, content classes and templates

  • Supply of Onsite eZ Publish Developer to provide Technical Lead for the Developer team

  • Remote eZ Publish Developer Support

While little change can be appreciated from viewing the site, changes to the content structure, consolidation of custom content classes and the automated generation of menu structures will make updates to the site quick and easy.

Challenges

The major challenge involved in the delivery of this project was a short time frame that covered the Christmas holiday period. The FPC Interactive Group Technology Manager, Mike Fegali, firmly managed all resources within the project and resolved any issue that arose is a prompt and timely fashion. The FPC developer team demonstrated a true commitment to professionalism in being able to carry out all their duties while under pressure. Best of all FPC showed an excellent sense of team work and worked well with the designIT personnel. This ensured the process went smoothly.
