Hear the Elders tell of their lives on missions and reserves. They are places full of contradictions. The Koorie Heritage Trust and State Library of Victoria have compiled the content into the first ever doumentary using the resources from their collections. The Koorie Hertiage Trust collected stories from the Elders in Victoria to give a fresh new perspective of this part of our history and culture.
"This old guy caught me and he give me a flogging and I went home bawling my head off," says Mr Atkinson, one of 12 Victorian Aboriginal elders who yesterday launched a new website on Aboriginal missions, featuring their stories.
At 72, Mr Atkinson is education officer at the Koorie Heritage Trust in King Street, which has created the Mission Voices website
www.abc.net.au/missionvoices with the ABC and Film Victoria to explore the lives on missions also including Ebenezer, Lake Tyers, Coranderrk, Framlingham and Lake Condah.
The website uses historic and contemporary images, documentary footage and artwork, and examines the six communities by focusing on themes including Christianity, war, activism, work and wages, land rights, spirituality and the "stolen generations".
